Technical logistics terms

Need to check something technical? Expand your logistics knowledge? Green Line is pleased to help!

Check various technical terms here, arranged in alphabetical order:

ADSp

ADSp stands for Allgemeine Deutsche Spediteurbedingungen (General German Freight Forwarding Terms and Conditions), which represent our General Terms and Conditions of Business.

The General German Freight Forwarding Terms and Conditions (ADSp) are recommended for non-binding use jointly by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), the Federal Association of German Industry (BDI), the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA), the Central Association of German Retailers (HDE) and the Association of German Freight Forwarders and Logistics Operators (DSLV).

All kinds of work performed within a transport contract are governed by the ADSp. It is immaterial here which sector of freight forwarding is provided, whether freight services, warehousing etc. The ADSp regulate questions of liability, remuneration, payment targets etc.

Green Line bases all its business transactions on the latest version of the ADSp General German Freight Forwarding Terms and Conditions, effectively as its own Terms and Conditions of Business.

The full unabridged form of the ADSp terms and conditions are available here in German and English:

AEO-F

AEO is the acronym for "Authorised Economic Operator", with "F" representing the highest level of certification ("simplified customs procedures" and "security").

Green Line carries the AEO-F certificate as a privileged logistics company that may perform customs procedures of economic importance in a simplified process within the EU.

Approval of AEO-F status is linked to extensive preconditions including:

  • Appropriate compliance with customer regulations in the past,

  • Satisfactory accounting with regard to business and transport documentation, enabling appropriate control,

  • Proof of creditworthiness and

  • Compliance with appropriate security standards.

The benefits for you: simpler procedures, faster consignments, flexibility and above all: security!

ATLAS

The Automated Tariff and Local Customs Handling System, abbreviated to ATLAS, is a German customs processing software, with which customs procedures can be automated. It is therefore possible to submit electronic messages to customs authorities in place of submitting written documents, such as customs declarations, import duty notifications etc.

Green Line knows its way around ATLAS and will ensure that your customs procedures run smoothly, seamlessly and securely.

CMR

CMR comes from French and stands for "Convention relative au contrat de transport international de marchandises par route", in other words International Convention on the International Transport of Goods by Road.

The CMR is applicable throughout Europe, regulating international shipments carried by road, for example by HGV. The CMR is only binding in French and English contractual languages. CMR consignment notes have to be completed and carried with all shipments of goods carried by road in Europe.

FCL

A Full Container Load, abbreviated to FCL, is a commercial term from freight container transport. It refers to the house-to-house transport of the entire container. With FCL, the shipping company accepts a loaded container from the loading company sealed by the customs authorities for shipment.

FIFO

FIFO is an acronym for First In – First Out.

In goods management, FIFO is the usual procedure adopted, as the oldest (first stored) goods should be used first wherever possible.

Incoterms

International Commercial Terms, in short Incoterms, denote an extensive collection of voluntary rules that are used to regulate commercial contracts in the international trade of goods. Incoterms, developed and continually adapted by international chambers of commerce, are intended to clarify the following questions above all:

  • Which transport costs do buyers and sellers bear?

  • Who bears the financial risk, and from when, in the event of loss of or damage to goods?

  • Who bears which insurance obligation?

Unlike the aforementioned contractual aspects, Incoterms do not regulate:

  • Transfer of property from the seller to the purchaser, in terms of place and time,

  • Payment conditions and

  • The underlying place of jurisdiction.

Intrastat

Intrastat is the inter-Community trade statistics system used to collect actual flows of goods between the member states of the EU. All companies resident in the EU, who exceed a specified financial limit of incoming and outgoing goods, are required to submit these statistics. In Germany, companies report their outgoing and incoming shipments of goods to the Federal German Office of Statistics.

All Intrastat submissions are combined in the so-called inter-trade statistics and are used by political decision-makers in the trade and development policy sectors. Green Line would be very pleased to handle your Intrastat submissions on your behalf!

Picking means putting together specified part-quantities (articles) from a large available volume. The employee who carries out this role is often known as a "picker". Traditionally picking has been part of stock-keeping and warehousing.

Contract logistics

The logistics sub-discipline "Contract logistics" denotes a Supply Chain Management (SCM) business model. Contract logistics means that a manufacturer or merchant of goods enters a long-term and work-sharing cooperative arrangement with a logistics service provider, with the service provider taking responsibility for logistics and logistics-related work along the entire value creation chain. The service provider therefore represents the link between all those involved in the value creation chain.

LCL

The acronym LCL – Less than container load – is used when several part-loads (packaged goods) from different shipment companies are combined in a single standardised freight container and unloaded at different destinations by different recipients.

LIFO

LIFO stands for Last In – First Out, a principle used to define the order in which goods in the warehouse are accessed. Unlike FIFO (First In – First Out), the order of removal from storage is reversed. With LIFO, the goods stored last are removed from storage first. This procedure is generally used with bulk goods or block storage.

Value-added Services

The term Value-added Services (VAS) is used to describe services that add value to a primary logistics service.

Green Line offers a wide number of value-added services:
